An honest starting point
Is transferring a UK pension right for you?
For many people it is not. It depends on the type of pension, your other income and where you live.
It may suit you if
- You have other income or assets to rely on in retirement
- You want more say over who inherits your pension
- You want flexibility in how and when you draw income
- You live abroad and want to manage currency risk
It may not suit you if
- Your pension is your main source of retirement income
- You would give up a guaranteed, inflation-linked income
- Your spouse relies on a survivor’s pension
- A transfer charge or fees would outweigh the benefits

About usCommon questions
What is a QROPS?
A QROPS is a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme: a pension scheme outside the UK that meets HMRC conditions to receive UK pension transfers. Whether it suits you depends heavily on where you live. See our QROPS guide.
Can I access my pension early?
Moving abroad does not change the UK minimum age at which you can normally draw a pension. Taking money earlier than that can bring heavy tax charges, and offers of early access are often a warning sign of a scam.
Do I have to transfer after a review?
No. Staying where you are is a valid outcome, and we only act if you choose to proceed.
Can I keep my UK pension if I move abroad?
Yes. Leaving the UK does not stop you holding a UK pension, and you can usually leave it where it is. Many expats review it because investment choice, charges, currency and tax differ once they live overseas. See our pension review guide.
What is the difference between a SIPP and a QROPS?
A SIPP stays within the UK pension system, while a QROPS moves the money into an overseas scheme. Each has different tax and charge consequences for expats. See our expat SIPP guide.
Do UK expats still pay UK inheritance tax?
UK inheritance tax can still apply to UK assets, and in some cases to worldwide assets, depending on your domicile status and how long you have been away. See our inheritance tax guide.
Can I get a UK mortgage while living abroad?
Yes, several lenders offer mortgages to UK expats, although criteria, deposits and rates differ from the UK high street. See our expat mortgages guide.
