Hansard Global Select Review for UK Expats: Portfolio Bond Charges

Global Select is Hansard’s current single premium, open architecture investment bond for expats and international investors. It is sold through advisers by Hansard International and Hansard Worldwide and replaces the older Hansard Capital Investment Bond. This page explains what it is, the charges Hansard publishes, what it does not publish, and what to ask before investing or if you already hold one.

It is general information for UK expats, not personal advice. Hansard’s product page is written for advisers and does not give the main charging rates. The figures below come from Hansard’s website and its schedule of monetary charges for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Check every figure against your own illustration.

This guide sits under our section on offshore investment bonds for expats. See every plan we cover on our product reviews page.

How Global Select works

You invest a lump sum into a life assurance bond, and the money is invested in assets chosen by you or your adviser. Because it is open architecture, you are not limited to a fixed fund list: Hansard says you can build a portfolio from funds, ETFs, shares, fixed interest securities and structured products. You can move existing assets in, appoint an investment adviser or discretionary manager, or use the bond for trust planning.

Hansard markets Global Select on having the lowest establishment charges and the best illustrated returns, citing independent research. Those are marketing claims for a given date and set of assumptions, so ask for the research and the illustration. The establishment charge rates are not published on the public pages.

Charges: what is published

Hansard’s schedule of monetary charges, valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, lists these for Global Select:

ChargeGBPUSDEUR
Service charge, quarterly147188174
External dealing charge, per transaction405348
Internal dealing chargeNot applicableNot applicableNot applicable
Monetary minimum in the annual management charge000

The schedule says monetary charges are expressed and charged in GBP, so confirm in your contract documents whether the USD and EUR amounts are converted. Charges can rise each year, normally on 1 July. Withdrawals and surrenders carry a bank transfer charge.

What is not published. The establishment charge, the annual management charge percentage, the minimum investment and any surrender terms are not in the public documents I could find. They matter more than the fixed charges above.

Adviser fees and fund costs. A bond with open architecture adds the costs of whatever you hold inside it, plus any adviser or discretionary manager fee. Ask for the total yearly cost of the whole arrangement.

The UK tax risk for expats

Hansard’s charges schedule treats Global Select among its personal portfolio products. If you become UK resident, a personal portfolio bond can face an annual tax charge on the bond’s value, whatever gains it makes. Take advice before returning to the UK. See our guides to offshore investment bonds and inheritance tax for UK expats, and to wills and trusts.

Questions to ask before you invest

  • What is the establishment charge and over how many years is it taken?
  • What is the annual management charge, and does it change with the size of the bond?
  • What would I get back if I cashed in after one, three and five years?
  • Which Hansard company would issue the bond, and what protection applies?
  • What would I pay for dealing, adviser and fund costs in total?
  • What happens if I move to the UK?
